Donation brings Nevada Gold Mines’ total contribution to Nevada students to more than $3.8 million over the past 13 years

Communities In Schools of Nevada (CIS) received a $501,000 donation from Nevada Gold Mines (NGM), a joint venture between Barrick (61.5%) and Newmont (38.5%). This is the first year that NGM funds will offer student support services in the form of an annual commitment to the organization. The donation will include tutoring, basic needs like food and clothing, and free tele-counseling in four school districts across Nevada, making a difference for local students at 15 Title I high-needs schools. NGM continues to help to maintain and expand CIS’ Integrated Student Supports (ISS), the nonprofit’s evidence-based model that equips students to take on and tear down barriers that stand between them and achieving success at school.

This donation by NGM, a $180,000 increase from their generous gift during the 2021-2022 school year and the largest donation NGM has gifted to CIS to date, will support approximately 18,000 students at 15 of CIS’ elementary, middle, and high schools across Clark, Elko, Humboldt, and Washoe counties. This is also the first year that NGM’s donation is supporting CIS schools statewide, helping the nonprofit expand to meet the growing demand.

“This ongoing investment by Nevada Gold Mines continues to subsidize our Integrated Student Supports, the foundational backbone of CIS”, said Tami Hance-Lehr, CEO and State Director, Communities In Schools of Nevada. “Thanks to Nevada Gold Mines, we are able to support our growing number of students living in poverty and facing hardships which include food insecurity, diminished access to mental and physical health care, homelessness, and discrimination. When dropout intervention occurs at the beginning of their educational careers, these students demonstrate a positive change in their studies and overall school experience and can focus on what matters most – graduating from high school and succeeding in life beyond school.”

Additional ways in which NGM’s recent donation is supporting CIS of Nevada:

  • This is the first year NGM is sponsoring schools in the Washoe County School District. The additional support enabled CIS to add a new elementary school in the district and provide CIS students with the essential resources they need to close the opportunity gap.
  • In the Clark County School District, this gift allowed CIS to place four site coordinators at Canyon Springs High School, doubling the one-on-one support at the school. This is the first CIS school to have a dedicated site coordinator per grade level.
  • These funds will provide ISS to students in four schools in the Elko County School District and five schools in the Humboldt County School District. Additionally, NGM employees provided over 3,200 school supplies, 20 full Thanksgiving meals, as well as coats, and holiday support for students and parents throughout Northeastern Nevada.
  • A portion of the funds will go towards free virtual mental health counseling for rural students in Elko County and Humboldt County via a partnership between CIS and UNLV’s The PRACTICE mental health clinic. Because of this free program, more than 80 percent of students who attended counseling said they believed the sessions helped their overall ability to manage emotions and feelings during the 2021-2022 school year.
  • NGM’s recent gift includes a $1,000 sponsorship to CIS of Northeastern Nevada’s Nite at The Races in August, which raised more than $16,500.

“NGM is thrilled to partner with CIS by continuing to support students, with the ultimate goal of increasing Nevada’s high school graduation rates. Now more than ever, it is critical that students have quality support at school as they look to plan for their future post-graduation. Not only is this partnership and investment felt immediately by students, but it will also have a profound long-term impact in creating value and delivering economic benefits to the Silver State,” said Alissa Wood, Head of Corporate Social Responsibility, Barrick North America.

Since 2009, Barrick (now Nevada Gold Mines, operated by Barrick) has demonstrated its commitment to bettering Nevada’s quality of education and, more importantly, the lives of the state’s students most at-risk of dropping out. Over the past 13 years, NGM has donated more than $3.8 million to Communities In Schools of Nevada.
