Making a Difference

Communities In Schools is one of the most effective dropout prevention strategies in the country, and we’ve been named one of the 100 non-profit organizations most likely to change the world by Worth magazine. With support from the community and key partnering agencies, we’ve been helping millions of young people stay in school and prepare for life for the past 30 years.

We believe that each child needs and deserves:

• A one on one relationship with a caring adult

• A safe place to learn and grow

• A healthy start and a healthy future

• A marketable skill to use upon graduation

• A chance to give back to peers and the community

CIS creates special initiatives to directly address specific factors that contribute to the dropout crisis. These initiatives are designed to be long-term, sustainable programs that are funded by donations and grants and are free to students and their families. By creating a support network of volunteers, social services, business and community resources; and integrating these resources and initiatives into the school, students and families can easily take advantage of them.

Our results on a national level speak volumes for what we do.

We are an outcomes based organization that tracks and monitors our programs closely as we deliver key services that make a positive improvement in the lives of our children. Over the past year, we’ve been able to accomplish change through our national network.

97% of CIS students remained in school
88% of CIS students were promoted to the next grade
86% of CIS students showed improvement in their behavior
83% of CIS high school seniors at risk for dropping out graduated

Effective Change in the Silver State

Nevada has one of the highest dropout rates in the Nation.  In fact, according to the Nevada Department of Education, 114 students drop out of school every instructional day. Communities In Schools of Nevada has been working to stop the clock on our dropout crisis in Nevada since 2003. We are the leading champion of connecting needed community resources to help meet students’ basic needs and provide them with the necessary tools for staying in school and preparing for their future. We currently serve over 23 locations including elementary schools, middle schools, combined schools (k-12), 1 high school and one community based site reaching over 16,000 children in Southern Nevada and work with nearly 10,000 children in our Northeastern Nevada region. Last year alone we coordinated nearly $850,000 worth of services.

Our Mission:

Our mission is simple. To champion the connection of needed community resources with schools to help young people successfully learn, stay in school and prepare for life.
