DROPOUT PREVENTION

WE ARE THE LEADING DROP OUT PREVENTION PROGRAM IN THE STATE OF NEVADA

Dropping out of school spells economic disaster for young people and our community. Nearly 57 percent of adult dropouts are not employed, comparing to nearly 40 percent of adults who completed high school and only 24 percent who completed a bachelor’s degree. Communities In Schools helps students stay in school and make right choices by connecting schools with needed community resources.

Rather than duplicating services or competing with other youth-serving organizations or agencies, Communities In Schools of Nevada identifies and mobilizes existing community resources and fosters cooperative partnerships for the benefit of students and families. By bringing resources, services, parents, and volunteers into schools, we create a community of caring adults who work hand in hand with educators.

We believe that each child needs and deserves:

• A one on one relationship with a caring adult

• A safe place to learn and grow

• A healthy start and a healthy future

• A marketable skill to use upon graduation

• A chance to give back to peers and the community

Our partnership model has allowed us to reach at-risk students on campus and in their community to bring them desperately needed services and programs that they otherwise might not have access to. The result is that we have helped to keep over 25,000 young people stay in school.

National research indicates there are identifiable risk factors that indicate whether a student is apt to drop out of high school. The research conducted by the National Dropout Prevention Center and Communities In Schools identified that if students’ needs were not met in these segments they will be at risk for dropping out of school:

Health & Wellness

Basic Welfare

Skills for the Future

Self Esteem & Joy

Family & Community Strengthening

Based on this research, Communities In Schools of Nevada has developed partnerships to address each of these segments.
